For newcomer youth, however, the cultural shifts ofadapting to a new country can intensify these pressures. For one young man, thesetensions grew into a painful family breakdown that left him homeless with few places toturn.Despite these challenges, he remained committed to his education and connected withLUSO Community Services Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS). With their support, heaccessed crisis services, food banks, and government programs. Determined to buildstability, he worked full-time, saved diligently, and secured an apartment. With time andspace, reconciliation with his family became possible, and he eventually returned home.Guided by SWIS, he enrolled in an Adult Education Program and proudly graduated withhis Ontario Secondary School Diploma in June 2025. Grateful for the encouragement andunwavering support he received, he celebrated this achievement as a turning point.Recently, he was accepted into a trades apprenticeship program, beginning a newchapter toward a promising and fulfilling career.His story is one of resilience, determination, and healing.
