From sledding to skating to scenic walks, there is something for everyone. Here is a guide to some great low-cost/free activities available in London, as well as tips to stay safe and warm this winter season!

  • Storybook Gardens Skate Trail: For a magical winter experience, check out the 250-metre skate trail at Storybook Gardens. Admission costs apply (around $4-5+tax per person), and there is a rental fee for skates. ($7+tax per person).
  • Neighbourhood-Managed Ice Rinks: Across London, there are volunteer-led natural ice rinks in various parks. These rinks are maintained by community members and are typically free to use when conditions allow.

Winter Walks, Sports & Nature

  • Springbank Park Trails: Springbank Park is huge and has many trails that are great for winter walks, snowshoeing, or just taking in the snowy scenery next to the Thames River.
  • Thames Valley Parkway: This extensive trail system is perfect for long winter hikes or simple strolls.
  • Snow tubing and sledding at local hills and parks: Grab a sled or even a sturdy piece of cardboard and head to hills at neighbourhood parks like Springbank Park (mentioned previously), Boler Mountain’s lower hill areas, or smaller community parks around London. Safety Tip: Make sure the hill is clear of obstacles and traffic, and sled during daylight hours for visibility!
  • Playing in the snow – classic and timeless: Build a snowman, snow fort, or snow angels in your backyard or local parks. These activities are free and fun for all ages!

Local Events & Community Programs

  • Recreation Drop-Ins: During the winter holidays, the City of London often offers free drop-in recreation programs at local community centres—everything from winter crafts to indoor sports. Be sure to explore your nearest community resource centre as well, as many also provide free seasonal activities. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to check out LUSO’s winter programming!

Tips for Staying Warm and Safe this Winter:

  • Dress in layers: Choose materials that trap heat, such as wool, silk or polyester. Don’t forget accessories as well, such as a hat/toque, scarf, mittens, and winter boots.
  • Be safe when walking on ice: Wear your winter boots or shoes with good traction to avoid slips and falls.
  • Safe shoveling:  Shoveling snow can be physically demanding. Always remember – bundle up, and lift with your legs, not your back!
  • Eat warm, nutritious foods: Warms meals and hot drinks can help maintain your body temperature. Make sure to also stay hydrated-cold weather can reduce your sense of thirst!
  • Look after your mental health: Blow the winter blues away by going outside when you can, even a short walk in daylight can help boost your mood during the cold winter months.

Winter in London doesn’t have to be expensive—or spent indoors. With plenty of free and low-cost activities available across the city, this season can be a chance to explore, play, and connect with your community in new ways. Whether you’re gliding across the ice, enjoying a snowy walk along the river, or joining in on local programs, there are countless ways to make the most of the colder months. Your next cozy, memorable, and budget-friendly adventure is waiting just around the corner. Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the season!
