September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to honour the children, families, and communities impacted by Canada's residential school system and to remember those who never returned home.
The day also marks Orange Shirt Day, which raises awareness about the lasting impacts of residential schools and reminds us that Every Child Matters.
At LUSO Community Services, we recognize the importance of learning about Indigenous history, honouring Indigenous cultures and experiences, and building communities where everyone is respected and valued.
Understanding Orange Shirt Day
Orange Shirt Day helps bring awareness to the experiences of Indigenous children who were forcibly removed from their families and communities and separated from their cultures and identities.
The orange shirt has become a symbol of the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem experienced by many Indigenous children through the residential school system.
Every Child Matters reminds us of the importance of ensuring that every child can grow up connected to their family, culture, and community.
Remembering and Learning
Truth and Reconciliation Day is an opportunity to remember the children and survivors of residential schools and to recognize the ongoing impacts on Indigenous individuals, families, and communities.
Learning about this history is an important step toward reconciliation. We can take time to listen to Indigenous voices, learn about residential schools and their legacy, and support Indigenous-led initiatives and organizations.
These conversations are important not only on September 30, but throughout the year.
Building a Community Where Everyone Belongs
At LUSO Community Services, we believe everyone should have access to support, opportunity, and a welcoming community.
We recognize the importance of respecting and celebrating the diverse cultures and identities within our community, while acknowledging the history and experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Through our programs, services, and community partnerships, we strive to help build a community where individuals and families feel respected, supported, and included.
Remember. Learn. Reflect.
September 30 is a time to remember, listen, learn, and reflect on our shared responsibility toward reconciliation.
As we recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we encourage everyone to take time to learn more and reflect on the importance of reconciliation.
