October is Women's History Month in Canada, a time to recognize the achievements, contributions, and experiences of women throughout history and today. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the importance of creating opportunities for the next generation to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
At LUSO Community Services, we believe that empowering young people starts with creating supportive environments where they feel valued, confident, and encouraged to be themselves.
Why Empowering Girls Matters
Confidence, positive self-image, leadership, and healthy relationships are important parts of growing up. Providing girls with opportunities to explore these areas can help them develop valuable life skills, build meaningful connections, and feel more confident expressing themselves.
When young people have supportive spaces to ask questions, share their perspectives, and learn from one another, they can develop a stronger sense of belonging and recognize their own strengths and potential.
Creating Opportunities to Learn and Grow
Empowerment begins with opportunities to learn, connect, and discover new possibilities. Supportive programs can help girls develop communication skills, navigate challenges, build healthy relationships, and explore what leadership means to them.
These experiences can make a meaningful difference as young people navigate friendships, school, and the many changes that come with growing up. By encouraging self-expression, mutual respect, and confidence, we can help create a community where girls feel supported in becoming their best selves.
LUSO Spotlight: EmpowerHER Girls' Group
At LUSO Community Services, we are proud to offer programs that encourage young people to build confidence, develop life skills, and connect with their peers.
The EmpowerHER Girls' Group, offered at Family Centre Huron Heights, provides girls ages 8–12 with opportunities to explore topics relevant to being a young woman in today's society. The group explores topics such as boundaries and consent, positive self-image, leadership, conflict resolution, and healthy relationships.
Through these conversations and activities, participants can learn from one another, develop important skills, and build confidence in a supportive environment.

Building a Future Where Every Girl Can Thrive
Women's History Month reminds us to celebrate the women who have helped shape our communities while continuing to create opportunities for future generations.
By encouraging confidence, supporting personal growth, and creating spaces where young people feel heard and respected, we can help build a stronger, more inclusive community where every girl has the opportunity to thrive.
At LUSO Community Services, we remain committed to supporting children, youth, and families through programs that foster connection, learning, and belonging.
